However, when websites are otherwise competing on similar factors, providing a fast, usable experience can support both search visibility and the user experience that search engines want to provide.

Our Website Performance Strategy
Performance optimization begins with measurement rather than randomly changing things and hoping the website gets faster. We first identify how the website currently performs, what resources are consuming the most time, and which pages or devices have the biggest problems.
We look at both desktop and mobile performance because the two experiences can be very different. A website may perform reasonably well on a fast desktop computer while struggling on a mobile device. We also consider the purpose of the page. A simple informational page has different performance requirements than a page containing a calculator, booking system, video, interactive form, or other complex functionality.
Once problem areas are identified, we prioritize improvements based on their likely impact. Not every performance recommendation is equally valuable, and some optimizations can involve tradeoffs. The goal is to improve real-world performance without removing functionality that the website needs.
Image Optimization
Large images are one of the most common causes of slow websites. A modern smartphone camera can produce an image that is several megabytes in size, which is fantastic for vacation photos and considerably less fantastic for a webpage.
We optimize images by using appropriate dimensions, compression, and modern image formats when supported. Images should generally be delivered at approximately the size required by the page rather than loading a massive original image and asking the browser to shrink it.
We also consider lazy loading, which allows images that aren’t immediately visible to load later when appropriate. This can reduce the amount of information a browser has to download when a visitor first opens a page.
Scripts, Plugins, and Code
Modern websites often rely on JavaScript for analytics, advertising, forms, animations, menus, chat tools, and other functionality. Each script can introduce additional processing and network requests.
We review scripts and other resources to determine whether they are necessary and whether they are being loaded efficiently. Unused plugins and unnecessary functionality can sometimes be removed, while scripts that aren’t required immediately may be deferred or loaded in a way that reduces their impact on the initial page experience.
For WordPress websites, plugin management is particularly important. Installing a plugin for every small feature can eventually create a website that has a plugin for the plugin that manages the plugins. We look for opportunities to simplify the website while preserving the functionality the business actually needs.
Caching and Content Delivery
Caching can significantly improve website performance by allowing frequently requested resources to be reused rather than generated or downloaded from scratch for every visitor.
Depending on the website and hosting environment, performance improvements may involve browser caching, server-side caching, page caching, object caching, or a content delivery network. A CDN can also help deliver static resources from locations that are geographically closer to visitors, which can be particularly useful for websites serving audiences across larger regions.
The appropriate combination depends on the website’s technology, hosting environment, traffic, and functionality. Performance optimization isn’t a matter of turning on every possible caching feature and hoping nothing catches fire.
Core Web Vitals
Google’s Core Web Vitals provide a standardized way to evaluate important aspects of website performance. The current Core Web Vitals focus on three primary measurements:
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures loading performance, specifically how quickly the largest visible content element becomes available.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness by evaluating how quickly a page responds to user interactions.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability, helping identify situations where content unexpectedly moves while a page is loading.
Together, these measurements provide a useful picture of how a website performs from a visitor’s perspective. A page that loads quickly but suddenly shifts its buttons around while someone is trying to click them may technically be fast, but it isn’t providing a particularly good experience.
Google PageSpeed Insights
Google PageSpeed Insights is one of the primary tools we use to evaluate website performance. It provides both lab-based testing and, when sufficient real-world data is available, information from actual Chrome users.
The PageSpeed Insights report provides performance scores along with recommendations and diagnostic information. It can identify issues involving images, JavaScript, CSS, caching, render-blocking resources, page structure, and other factors that can affect performance.
The score itself is useful, but it shouldn’t become the only goal. A website shouldn’t be rebuilt simply to turn a score from 92 into 98 if doing so makes the site harder to use or removes valuable functionality. We use PageSpeed Insights as a diagnostic tool to identify meaningful improvements, then consider those recommendations in the context of the actual website.
Lab Data vs. Real-World Data
One important aspect of performance measurement is understanding the difference between laboratory testing and real-user data. Lab tests run under controlled conditions, while real-user data reflects the experiences of actual visitors using different devices, browsers, networks, and geographic locations.
Google’s Chrome User Experience Report, commonly known as CrUX, provides real-world performance data for eligible websites. When available, this data can show how actual users experience a website rather than relying exclusively on a single test environment.
This distinction matters because a website that performs well on a developer’s high-end desktop connected to a fast broadband connection may behave very differently for someone using a mid-range smartphone on a cellular connection.
Performance Is an Ongoing Process
Website performance isn’t something that should only be addressed when a website becomes painfully slow. New plugins get installed, new tracking tools are added, images accumulate, content grows, advertising campaigns change, and software gets updated. Any of these changes can affect performance.
